Yoga strap alternatives you can find around the house

March 16, 2022 //  by Di Hickman//  8 Comments

Whenever you start a new movement practice chances are you’re a little gun shy to invest money in equipment. After all who knows if you’ll like it? Or if you’ll still be doing it in 3 months once the “shiny syndrome” has worn off! If you’re a beginner at yoga and in need of some yoga strap alternatives, I am here to help. I did a quick 10-minute search around the house and found these items to use in a pinch in your practice.

If you can’t view the embedded video above, you can view the video on YouTube. Maybe add it to a playlist? Above all, remember to subscribe to my channel. New videos are uploaded regularly. However, for exclusive longer format videos sign up for my Patreon community. Each month we explore poses, transitions, and trouble areas. Patrons also get early access to all my videos, along with lots of other benefits. You join today for as little as $1 a month.

Yoga Strap Alternatives

April 2020 when the pandemic hit I did a post all about what to use instead of yoga blocks. Finally, the next installment is here in yoga strap alternatives. We’re going to look at things you can use to bridge the gap between hands and feet. Because that’s is typically what yoga straps are used for. Firstly, let’s look at what we’re wearing. Can you grab the pant legs or socks? If your socks or legwarmers are long tube socks take them off and throw them over your foot arch and use them as a strap! This is a great use for odd socks, or old stockings or tights.

Still in the wardrobe then grab a belt. These work as great yoga strap alternatives because they usually have a clasp. This gives you more options. It’s also great for those with hand, wrist, or grip issues. A few years ago, when I taught classes at the gym I used neckties as straps! A little ratchet, but they worked until I could afford to invest in some ‘real’ yoga straps!

A quick and easy alternative to a yoga strap is just a long towel. Another fun one is a scarf! Which has the added benefit of keeping your foot warm and cozy! No belts or scarves? What about a dressing gown belt? Judo belt? You’d be surprised how many things look like belts!

If like me you have some fitness equipment lying around then use that as a strap. Loop bands, resistance tubing, pilates circles, and jump ropes can all make great yoga strap alternatives. None of these? Check the kid’s room for a jump rope, or hula hoop!

Don’t overlook the obvious either. Your yoga mat bag may have a strap attached to it already! If not even just the bag or regular handbag can make a great yoga strap alternative. Heck, a camera shoulder strap would work too!

Finally, in an absolute pinch maybe an electrical cord. The caveat here is don’t pull on it too tightly and dislodge or break the wiring inside. But, in desperation, it does work as a yoga strap. Think outside the box friends. But if you’re practicing regularly invest in the props to elevate your practice!

I forgot my yoga strap at my old place and I really need to get one now. It is such a useful item for me, I have very tight hemstrings

These are great ideas! I actually use a long towel or a scarf during the time I did not have a proper yoga strap.

I don’t have yoga straps, but that’s a great idea to use a belt or tube socks! I will definitely try some poses using a belt!

It’s great to hear that there are plenty of yoga strap alternatives. These seem like viable options and also means you can use items you already have.

Yesssss! Thank you for sharing these strap alternatives. I actually don’t do yoga but need a strap to help exercise my foot for peroneal tendonitis. I don’t have the exercise band but I have tons of belts, scarfs and long towels!
