Review: King Athletic Muscle Roller Balls

September 5, 2015 //  by Di Hickman//  Leave a Comment

Muscle roller ball

Incase you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years the hot fitness trend that’s here to stay is self myofascial release (SMR). Usually this is involved a foam roller and is associated with pain so bad that it’s so very good. That last part could just be me though. So when I went to IDEAWORLD in July a couple of the sessions I attended were about SMR and releasing fascia, self massage and generally inflicting pain on yourself. In one of the sessions we used Trigger Point Massage Balls or muscle roller balls, I loved them and decided to get some when I got back home, and then life happened and I promptly forgot about them… until recently. I got the chance to try this muscle roller ball set from King Athletic for free in exchange for a review I jumped at the chance, because hey it was something I knew I needed.

Muscle Roller Balls

So let’s talk muscle roller balls, sounds dirty but  get your head out of the gutter because if you’re serious about your fitness you need these balls in your life. In the set from King Athletic you get THREE balls. They come in two color options, green and orange. In the green set you get two green balls and one black. If you’ve used lacrosse balls these are basically the same thing. Hard, tough rubber balls that you roll on, then hold that point of ‘discomfort’ to release the tension.

I foam roll my calves but it’s tough to get deep into the calf belly, and my calves are one of my ‘problem areas’ so I was eager to try them out on a recurring knot I have… yeah the muscle roller balls worked really well! So I moved up and tried them on my piriformis, the deep muscle in the hip. Tough to get to through the glutes with the foam roller, but the muscle roller balls from King Athletic did the trick and had me in pain almost immediately. But in a good way… yes such a good way, because it feels so much better AFTER you roll.

So here’s the kicker. The original ball I was going to get by Trigger Point is $20 and I get THREE balls from King Athletic for less than that (as of today they are $18.97 for a set of three balls, including carry case!). Sorry Trigger Point but your branding is not worth three times the price for something that works EXACTLY THE SAME! I’ve used both, trust me they feel exactly the same!

Initially I was thinking “why do I need three” but honestly I like that these are way easier to carry than a foam roller and do a better job honestly. Easy to pop one in your gym bag so it’s always available for workouts, one for the RV and one for home! Simple. Ok ok, probably I’ll skip leaving one in the RV and use it with Personal Training clients instead.

In all, highly recommend these muscle roller balls from King Athletic, plus $1 of every sale goes to breast cancer research. Plus with a lifetime guarantee you cannot go wrong!
