Restorative vs Yin Yoga, what’s the difference?

May 24, 2022 //  by Di Hickman//  Leave a Comment

Do you know the difference between restorative and yin yoga? Basically, when thinking about restorative vs yin yoga it’s all about the support and energy of the pose. Learn more in this short video!

If you can’t view the embedded video above, you can view the video on YouTube. Maybe add it to a playlist? Above all, remember to subscribe to my channel. New videos are uploaded regularly. However, for exclusive longer format videos sign up for my Patreon community. Each month we explore poses, transitions, and trouble areas. Restorative vs Yin Yoga, the differences

So when we think about restorative vs yin yoga there are a couple of main differences. The first really is that in yin yoga props are optional. In restorative props are a necessity. While yin can use props also, restorative poses always have support.

Another difference in restorative vs yin yoga is the energy and integrity of the poses. For yin yoga typically you’re looking to “feel a stretch”. In restorative that is NOT the case. Restorative yoga is about relaxation and supporting yourself enough to settle into the pose with no “stretch”.

How do you know the difference? In a pose like butterfly, you could support the legs in either yin or restorative. However, in restorative it’s all about comfort and “filling the gaps” with props. This might mean providing cushion for the bum, the ankles, and the head. Also maybe adding support for the chest or arms. I hope this helps show you that there is a subtle difference between restorative and yin yoga!
