Meatless Monday: Veggie Grill again & Earth Day!

Tomorrow is Earth Day and as such the Meatless Monday is pushing the movement to eat Meatless for Earth day! There really is no better thing you could do today than commit to eating meatless for at least Earth day, if not every Monday! Three reasons that going meatless helps the Earth:

  • The meat industry generatesĀ nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that are accelerating climate change worldwide . . . far more than transportation. And annual worldwide demand for meat continues to grow. Reining in meat consumption once a week can help slow this trend.
  • The water needs of livestock are tremendous, far above those of vegetables or grains. An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Soy tofu produced in California requires 220 gallons of water per pound.
  • On average, about 40 calories of fossil fuel energy go into every calorie of feed lot beef in the U.S. Compare this to the 2.2 calories of fossil fuel energy needed to produce one calorie of plant-based protein. Moderating meat consumption is a great way to cut fossil fuel demand.

It’s easy so go meatfree šŸ˜‰ I’m here every Monday showing recipes, restaurants and reviewing easy to find plant based foods for you to try. Today before I share what I bought this week I want to share some vegan junk food. Let’s face it easy go to restaurants are something we all take advantage of at some point for meat free meals I’d advise trying Veggie Grill! Now the good thing about Veggie Grill aside from being meatfree and comfort food is that they have an app, where you can earn freebies!

To give you an example the reason we went to Veggie Grill on Saturday night was because we got an alert on our phone from the app saying that for Easter/Spring this weekend they were offering a free starter! When you activate the ‘coupon’ on the app it generates a code.Ā All you do is show your phone to the cashier, they enter the code and VOILA – free food! We did exactly this Saturday night and had our free starters for Easter.

I decided that I was going to have the chill out wings, which are Gardien wings with BBQ sauce and chipotle ranch – $6.95 but free with the app! There were actually FIVE wings here but someone took one while I was snapping a photo! Hmm wonder who that was šŸ˜‰

For my main course I like the “pick-a-pair”. One side or soup and one 1/2 salad. Perfect! I had the all hail kale salad and the sweetheart fries! yummy!

Bob chose to get theĀ Mondo Nachos 6.95 NEW!Ā ā€œChicasaā€ taco blend of veggieĀ proteins, caramelized onions, mashed avocado, VG-Cheese, jalapeƱos, soy cream andĀ corn chips. It’s big! We shared both our starters to get a rounded meal and these were delicious, not as good as the notcho’s from Real Food Daily, but yummy!

veggie grill C 2014-04-26

As usual Bob went with a cheese burger.Ā Topped with VG-Cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, red onion, chipotle ranch. Side of sweetheart fries!

veggie grill D 2014-04-26

Yep ALL this food is VEGAN, no animal products, meat-free, cholesterol free and delicious! Plus with the VG app to save $$ and get food freebies in the future all you do is snap a pic of the receipt via the app and they update your points on the app once the image is approved. So I got the starter for free, paid for the pick-a-pair $6.95 and I got 70 points!

Definitely worth going to Veggie Grill or other veggie place as an intro to the meatfree lifestyle!
