Meatless Monday – review: Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet Shreds (cheddar)

Wow could that BE a longer title? Anyway today we’re going cheesey with Follow Your Heart (or FYH as we like to call it) Vegan Gourmet Shreds, cheddar style. They do a few different styles and I’ll be reviewing those soon as we try new flavors and varieties. I’ve been trying out a few different vegan ‘cheeses’ and already reviewed the Trader Joes mozzarella shreds so look for more cheesey reviews soon 😉

We like eating at the FYH restaurant and I’ve reviewed that a few times now and we’ve eaten a few of their own brand foods available in their store and health food stores. Bob wanted to try  these and I’m open to trying the new foods. As you can see above, these are dairy free (sometimes these so called veggie cheeses have casein in them!), gluten free, and soy free.

Like regular cheese a serving size is just ONE oz. 80 calories per  serving, 6g fat, and a whopping 270mg sodium. Again this is why I am steering AWAY from processed foods. Whilst this is nice for the occasional treat it is NOT for everyday use.

Since being vegan my only real cheese vice as been vegan pizza (at FYH!) and a little “cheese” on my chili or eggplant “parmesan”. I have to say that the packaging states that “it melts” and whilst I didn’t use if for pizza. It didn’t melt on my chili or eggplant. I think you have to grill/broil it for it to melt.

It did taste ok, though towards the end of the package the shreds resembled less grated cheese and more finely grated parmesan dust. I think I preferred it to the Trader Joes variety, but then they were different flavors: mozzarella vs cheddar; which may be the reason!

Have you tried vegan cheeses? Which is your favorite?
