Is a yoga towel good for yoga?

April 18, 2015 //  by Di Hickman//  Leave a Comment

ABX yoga mat review triangle

So recently I’ve been doing some reviews and while some are products that I’ve used previously, some are new products that I’ve been eager to try out. One of those is the ABX yoga towel (I received the product in exchange for an honest review), this  towel sits on top of your yoga mat and soaks up the sweat while you get your asana on.  So as you can see above the towel fits great on the mat, and was actually a little longer, it hung over maybe an inch over the edges.

The towel had a small pocket on one end. Enough that you could slip under a locker key, or car keys, and keep them out of everyones way. This is a nice touch. The ABX yoga towel itself is made from microfibre material, meaning it’s super absorbent but thin. I love using the microfibre cloths for cleaning so I was eager to see how it did for yoga. On the underside of the towel are grip dots ALL OVER the towel to ensure it stays in place.

One thing I will say is this towel smelt lovely. I can’t even describe it. Just beautiful smelling, no chemical smells here and I used it straight out of the package. Of course though the proof is in the pudding, would this towel stay put during asana practice? Yes! I chose a hot day to film my video review (scroll down to view or check out my YouTube channel), and I sweated, but the towel stayed put, even in downward facing dog which is the true slip test for sweaty hands and feet.

I loved the feel of the towel under my hands and feet. I felt stable and secure and my hands and feet felt dry at all times. No clammy sweaty hands that I need to towel off. Because the towel is microfibre it’s able to absorb the sweat whilst still being thin enough that I could wrap up my towel in my mat and squeeze both into my mat bag!

One other thing I thought about is the possibility of taking it on vacation with me. Much easier to put this in my luggage than a yoga mat! I’m going to try that next month and take it on our lake trip. Whilst we don’t have a lot of room in the RV there is the outdoors, and the fact that this is washable makes that more appealing! Rolled or folded up it was pretty compact, maybe the size of a hand towel or size of a cannister of tennis balls, which makes it great for traveling!

All in all I was very impressed with this product. As someone who teaches yoga I found it very useful and would definitely recommend it if you are into hot yoga or if like me you sweat all over the place during yoga. I also think this would be great to have if you use community mats at your gym or yoga studio. If you don’t want to buy an expensive mat, this yoga towel can really help.
