Through the magic of the internet and wordpress I am blogging into the future. Saying I scheduled this post last week just doesn’t sound as fun does it? So as I’ll be off enjoying some Southern California scenery I’m going to review this Vegan Tikka Masala from Trader Joes, plus give you the grocery shopping low down from last week (scroll down, really far down!). Before I was vegan I was vegetarian, for 20 years, and I used to like the paneer tikka masala from Trader Joes. It was similar to Shahi Paneer that we’d order at Indian restaurants, so when I saw a VEGAN frozen ready meal I just had to try it, just for the sake of you Meatless Monday blog readers 😉 It’s a tough job but someone has to do it!
So firstly just because it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s healthy, afterall oreos are vegan. So bear in mind that this is processed as such it’s not something I’d have weekly, but it’s something that is decent when you are transitioning to a plant based lifestyle. At 430 calories it’s not too bad but DAMN 32% of those calories are from fat! Damn that coconut milk!!! There is 20g of protein too, which I cannot imagine where that comes from because as vegans we’re all protein deficient right?
In the box it looks about right, though the rice looks bland. Probably because I prefer brown rice? I will say that when I picked it up out the freezer I didn’t even notice it had soy in it. Not that I care about soy, but honestly I’d have prefered veggies. I’m at THAT turning point in my vegan journey where I prefer real foods rather than processed ‘balls’. I’d have preferred balls made from lentils or something. Damnit I need to get in the kitchen and make something like that… and now I’m hungry…
Once cooked in the microwave, which is whole point of these meals IMO because otherwise you’d cook something yourself, it looked ok. As you can see there is a piddly portion of rice. Had I known I would have prepared more rice. Honestly that would probably a better way to eat this. Cook it as is but make more rice, I usually have some in pre-cooked in the fridge on this occasion though I was SOL, and then split the balls and sauce between two people and add a shit ton of veggies 🙂 At least that would even out the 810 mg of sodium in this!!!
If you are in a pinch then this was an ok meal, I wouldn’t eat it weekly but as a “shit I’ve had a busy day and it’s just not stopping, I have 15 minutes to prep, cook and eat dinner and head out the door again” option then yes it does the job. Taste wise it was ok, a little creamy (coconut) but with a lingering taste of aniseed/licorice (fenugreek) which I wasn’t too fond of. Definitely worth trying just to support the vegan products.
